Dwarfs are a popular and frequent subject in paintings by Heinrich Schlitt. These forest-dwelling beings, born out of human imagination, are traditionally associated with either negative or positive qualities, but Schlitt’s paintings almost invariably show dwarfs in a good light. In his works, which are not without humour, the diminutive protagonists can be seen blowing bubbles from the cap of a mushroom, chasing butterflies with a net, serenading a tree frog, preparing soup, painting, reading a newspaper or smoking a pipe while wandering in the forest, usually accompanied by frogs and crickets.
Heinrich Schlitt may be familiar not only to fans of paintings, as he tried his hand at a variety of genres. His name appears in many publications, books, periodicals and newspapers alike, but he is perhaps most popular today among collectors of tankards. Schlitt was one of the most prominent artists employed by Villeroy & Boch, the long-established German porcelain manufacturer. The beer tankards he designed, often featuring his beloved dwarfs, are still highly prized by collectors today.
