The picture is a small copy of the side altarpiece depicting Saint Ladislaus, which was painted in 1778 by Vinzenz Fischer for the Cathedral in Nagyvárad (today Oradea, Romania). The cathedral, dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, was founded by King Saint Ladislaus, who was later laid to rest here. The legend of its foundation is related in the Illuminated Chronicle, based on earlier sources: during a hunt the king found the spot where, commanded by an angel, he built the church. In Vinzenz Fischer’s altarpiece Our Lady of Hungary is marking out the site for the church to be built, and a small angel beside her is showing the ground plan of the Baroque cathedral, designed by Franz Anton Hillebrant, which is still standing today. Bachmann’s copy – his only known work – follows Fischer’s altarpiece, using a slightly more detailed presentation and adding some anecdotal elements.
