Hungarian National Gallery
February 23, 2019

16:00 - 23:00:00

The carnival season is here. The carnival evening at the Hungarian National Gallery is linked to our Dezső Korniss exhibition. “From the Clearest Springs,” says the title in reference to folk roots, so we will also await visitors with events connected in some way to Hungarian folk art, folk music and folk tradition.

The matinée events for children begin at 4 p.m. with a creative and a music workshop. The modern music that will be played is rooted in folklore, so children will be able to have fun in a dance house environment. Of course there can be no carnival without a fancy dress competition, but this time the theme will be folk costumes and folk motives.

MATINÉE PROGRAMME FOR THE LITTLE ONES

4 p.m – 6. p.m. Linked to the Korniss exhibition, the Hungarian House of Music will hold a folk instrument-making workshop, where children and parents can make overtone flutes (tilinkó), slide whistles and straw whistles.
In the spirit of Zoltán Kodály’s motto “Let music be for everyone”, the Hungarian House of Music wants to bring music and musical experience closer to visitors driven by the ambition to make music and the appreciation of music an important part in the lives of as many families, children and young people as possible.

6 p.m. HUNGARIAN FOLK TALES NARRATED BY SAXOPHONE – VIKTOR TÓTH’S JAZZ CONCERT
Viktor Tóth is among the most talented jazz musicians of his generation. His album Climbing with Mountains was awarded best jazz LP of 2007. He was selected jazz personality of 2010 at Fidelio’s nationwide voting in 2011, yet he sees himself as a man on a quest in life and with the musical ambition to create unity through universal harmony.
In his performance promising lots of fun for both children and adults, Viktor narrates folk tales projected onto a screen with his saxophone, similarly to how it was done with the piano at the time of silent films. His project was met with success in the USA, Berlin, at the Anilogue Film Festival in Vienna and in Transylvania too.

7.30 p.m. GÓBÉ CONCERT AND DANCE HOUSE
Nothing is more natural for the members of the band called Góbé than authentic folk music in an urban environment, which they use as their own musical vernacular and means of self-expression. Pop and light music also form an integral part of their music as these also define their cultural identity. Their production is ’not authentic enough’ to be called folk music but is ’too folky’ to be called light music, while the influence of classical music makes it even more impossible to limit it to a single genre.
Their concert will be following by a fantastic dance house held in the Gallery’s ballroom.

6 p.m. – 9 p.m. PÁLINKA TASTING
By the courtesy of the Alexander Pálinka House, the first 300 visitors will receive a tasting coupon at the entrance, which can be used to taste 1 cl of pálinka at Alexander’s counter between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. in the museum’s Csontváry room.
